First, it was just me and my parents, and then my sister was born shortly before my ninth birthday. Over the next six years, I went on a few trips with friends, my girlfriend, and my university. And my parents and sister had all traveled at least once separately too, whether for work, school, or leisure. And, I learned more about the sort of things my parents are planning for when both of their children are adults. While my parents work on computers and are by no means technophobes, I was able to make the trip with my dad easier by having an app for everything.

A cut to national insurance — a levy paid by people who work — costing around £10 billion ($12.7 billion) is likely, according to multiple UK media reports. But soaring government debt, crumbling public services and a lackluster economy leave the chancellor with very little room for further substantial giveaways. Christopher Furlong/Getty ImagesOther so-called “unprotected” areas of the national budget, such as social care and the police force, are also at risk. “That seems unlikely when public services are creaking,” they added. OBR chair Richard Hughes said in January that the government had provided no detailed breakdown of departmental spending plans beyond March next year, giving only headline figures.

London CNN —UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has taken the axe to Britain’s biggest current infrastructure project, despite warnings from business leaders that the U-turn will damage investor confidence in the country. “This means £36 billion of investment in the projects that will make a real difference across our nation,” he added. “Any deviation could result in a loss of investor trust, and this would have a considerable negative impact on the UK. The ambitious HS2 project falls into this category.”The U-turn was also blasted by Richard Walker, the boss of supermarket chain Iceland, and until recently a long-time Conservative Party member. The government’s “evident inability” to deliver on major projects “is devastating to both its credibility and to business confidence,” Walker wrote in The Guardian newspaper Sunday.

London CNN —The UK government has moved to take control of the country’s second biggest city, Birmingham, after the local council effectively declared itself bankrupt earlier this month. The government has also proposed an inquiry to understand how Birmingham landed in its current financial mess. “The need for action in Birmingham is pressing,” he added. Birmingham City Council issued a so-called section 114 notice on September 5, which means it must halt all spending except on essential services such as schooling, housing, social care, waste collection and road maintenance. The plan is due to be discussed at an extraordinary meeting of the council on September 25.

Bellingham is only 20 and already has very high-mileage at the top end of the game. Barring injuries Bellingham will face a huge workload this season and world players union FIFPRO has warned that he could be vulnerable to burnout if not managed properly. Only Rooney came anywhere close to Bellingham's total with 10,989 minutes while Lampard's total was 3,477 and David Beckham had not even managed 1,000 senior minutes before turning 20. "It is important for clubs and national teams to take a balanced approach when it comes to managing young players' workloads." Southgate will hope that Bellingham is given sufficient time to re-charge between now and the start of Euro 2024.

London CNN —Birmingham — the biggest British city after London — is in dire financial straits. “Local government is facing a perfect storm,” Sharon Thompson, Birmingham City Council’s deputy leader, said in remarks broadcast Tuesday. How Birmingham went bustThompson blamed Birmingham’s financial troubles partly on an outstanding £760 million ($950 million) legal bill pertaining to the equal pay claims, which resulted from a Supreme Court ruling in 2012. The original case was brought by 174 former council employees, all except four of whom were women. They argued that this breached the equality clauses of their employment contracts under the Equal Pay Act of 1970 — and the court agreed.

London CNN —Britain’s second-biggest city effectively declared itself bankrupt on Tuesday, shutting down all nonessential spending after being issued with equal pay claims totaling up to £760 million ($956 million). Birmingham City Council, which provides services for more than one million people, filed a Section 114 notice on Tuesday, halting all spending except on essential services. The deficit arose due to difficulties paying between £650 million (around $816 million) and £760 million (around $954 million) in equal pay claims, the notice report says. The city now expects to have a deficit of £87 million ($109 million) for the 2023-24 financial year.
